The need

In Argentina, 9 million people do not have access to clean or safe drinking water. In sparsely populated rural areas, these gaps are magnified, affecting 37.6% of the population.

The province of Santiago del Estero is located in a semi-arid region with significant temperature fluctuations and distinct rainy and dry seasons, a situation exacerbated by the climate crisis. It is one of the Argentine provinces with the highest levels of unmet basic needs (NBI). In many territories of Santiago del Estero, underground aquifers contain high levels of salts and volcanic-origin arsenic, making it challenging to obtain water through drilling.

Rural families depend on municipal water tanker trucks, collect rainwater in various types of plastic containers, and often need to travel to obtain this resource. The lack of water has significant impacts on their quality of life and access to other fundamental rights.

About the project

To address this issue, ISF-Ar is implementing a program to provide access to water in dispersed rural communities with different lines of action.

Actions:

  • Construction of water access systems.

  • Survey and data generation in remote areas.

  • Strengthening of local capacities through training, counseling and network articulation.

  • Impact in public policies.

Storing safe water is crucial for coping with drought. That's why ISF-Ar and HEI are building rainwater harvesting and storage systems so that people don't have to rely on water that is not suitable for human consumption. In 2024, the goal is to build solutions for 80 families in the southern region of Santiago del Estero.
